North Carolina is ready for a fresh start!

As some of you may know, my name is Jenny Marshall and I’m running for Congress right here in North Carolina’s 5th district. Living here has been a blessing for my family and working in the public school system has afforded me the opportunity to give back to my community.

As both a teacher and a mom, I have not been a stranger to putting others first.  I have spent many days after school helping struggling students, made sure they had lunch when their accounts were short and winter coats when the weather turned cold.  I have devoted thousands of hours reaching voters though grassroots organizing for Democrats and their campaigns.  I’ve invested a lot in my community-- So when the worst-case scenario happened this past November, I decided I really had to up my game—I had to run for office.

So, needless to say, putting the classroom behind me was hard, but the dire circumstances our country is in right now have shown me I needed to make a choice. Just like I chose to invest in this district when I moved here, I knew I needed to make the choice again to invest in changing the lives of the citizens that live in it for the better. There was simply no way for me to, in good faith, turn away from some of the frankly really horrible things going on in our district and in our nation.

But enough about me—for this campaign to really take off the ground, it has to be about you. About us. About people of color, women, LGBTQ folks, immigrants, workers, and parents all working together to turn the tide in the people’s favor. This campaign has never been and will never be about just me—it’s about our collective vision for America’s future.

Because right now, under Republican leadership—under Donald Trump in Washington and Virginia Foxx here at home—we are seriously struggling.

Corporatism and greed continue to empower career politicians like Virginia Foxx to rob the hardworking citizens of this district. They continue to empower corruption and neglect at every level of our government.

And if we want to really, truly fix these issues all around us, we have to start at the bottom. We have to start at the foundation of the unequal system in which we live—the economy. Because folks, we have a serious problem.

When exactly one half of all the 5th district residents are low-income or poverty level, we have a problem. When nearly one-third of children in Ashe county live in poverty, we have a problem. When schools are closing and our infrastructure is crumbling, we have a problem. When the top 20 wealthiest people own more wealth than the bottom 150 million , we have a problem. When citizens all over the country can’t make an honest living off of $7.25 an hour, we have a problem.

When our student debt has soared over $1 trillion in the past seven years, we have a problem. When the top 25 hedge-fund managers in this country are making more than all of America's kindergarten teachers combined, we have a problem.
What’s worse, the GOP and Virginia Foxx nothing to solve these problems. In fact, they’ve done everything in their power to keep them around. They have consistently voted against our best interests in order to line their own pockets, and they’ve profited off of our hardships for as long as they’ve been able to get away with it.

It’s high time we say no more. No more turning a blind eye to those among us who are struggling. No more corporatism, no more tax cuts for the rich, no more obscene spending on defense and fossil fuels while Medicaid and social security programs sit by the wayside.

With your help, this campaign will stand against all these obstacles and more.

We will fight for a system that benefits small businesses and their owners. We will fight to end the unfair special treatment big companies receive in the economy today.
We will fight for a mandatory federal minimum wage of at least $15 an hour. We will fight for it, because Virginia Foxx sure won’t—she’s voted against every proposed minimum wage increase in her entire career .

We will fight for fair trade agreements that work for American businesses and their employees. We will fight to promote programs that train skilled workers to meet the demands of growing industries like green energy and will help rebuild our infrastructure.

We will fight to keep big money out of politics and to end Citizens United and other disastrous policies that undermine our democracy.

We will fight for pay equity between men and women and people of all races.

And as a teacher, I want to prioritize public education and adequate funding for our children’s future.

It’s my firm belief that when we band together to combat these economic injustices, the rest will begin to fall into place. Overturning economic inequality in such dramatic ways will set the tone for future movements, movements that will promote social, gender-based, and environmental justice alongside economic fairness.

All this is why I ask you today to join me in this fight.

Before we leave here today, I want to end with one of my favorite quotes by Thomas Paine that I hope will shine a little ray of hope on this often-dark situation....

“Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”

Folks, he’s right—this will not be an easy battle. There will be obstacles, frustrations, and more than a few disappointments. But in the end, the triumph will be spectacular.

So, let’s fight together. Let’s put in the hard work to end economic inequities present in our system Working together, we will create a community where inequalities, social and economic, are a thing of the past.

Where no one in our district or our nation has to suffer from preventable diseases and treatable conditions because they lack access to quality health care.

Where kids have access—from pre-K right on through college—to ample, affordable educational opportunities regardless of their family’s economic background.

Where equality and opportunity are fundamental rights for all citizens of this country, regardless of race, orientation, or identity.

Where big business no longer butts its nose into politics and no longer has the ability to purchase power.

Where our environment is given the protection it deserves and all of us have access to clean water and air for generations to come.

Where all people are able to enjoy the fruits of their hard work and provide for their families, free from exploitation and insecurity at the hands of greedy politicians.

With your help, I know we will make this vision a reality. Please support our campaign with a donation so that we can change our future and put the people’s voice back into power.
