Call to Action: Matthew Calcara - Kansas State House District 30 - End of May Contribution Drive

End of May Contribution Drive & Our Revolution Endorsement

Progress | Prosperity | Integrity

Our Revolution Endorsement

Last night, (May 15) the membership of Our Revolution: Kansas City voted on candidate endorsements.

I am honored to receive Our Revolution Kansas City’s endorsement. Their issues with respect to income inequality, Medicare for All, and education align with our campaign’s ideas. I am fighting for low and middle-income Kansas families by shifting the tax burden back toward the wealthy and large corporations.

Our Revolution is built upon the success of Bernie Sanders’ historic presidential campaign, and its hundreds of local branches across the country continue to thrive with the support of an unprecedented level of grassroots organizers.

We'll be working alongside these organizers to advance our common vision of a more just, equitable and prosperous Kansas!

Spoiler: our campaign has raised more than any other Democratic challenger for the Kansas House of Representatives, per the latest round of financial reporting. 100% of that funding came from individuals like you.

In fact, our fundraising was so good it made local headlines in the SM Post:

Cindy Holscher leads fundraising efforts for 2018 House election cycle in Shawnee Mission area; newcomer Matt Calcara outraises incumbent Randy Powell.

That’s right. We outraised the incumbent!

And not by a little, either. By quite a bit.

All eyes are on us to see how much momentum we can build between now and November to beat Randy Powell!

From the SM Post Article

Among the more notable results from the 2017 fundraising reports was the performance of Matt Calcara, a Democrat who is running for the District 30 seat held by Republican Randy Powell. Calcara has raised more than $14,000 since declaring his candidacy in May. That’s more than double the $6,100 in contributions Powell garnered for 2017. Calcara has more than $13,000 cash on hand compared to just under $8,000 for Powell.

Keep in mind, all of Powell’s donations–literally 100% of them in 2017–came from PACs and business interests. See for yourself (PDF).

His two biggest donations (both for the maximum amount of $500 per cycle) were the Koch-controlled KS Chamber of Commerce PAC and something called Centre Management Company. There is literally not even an address available for that entity on the form Rep. Powell filed. They were his biggest donors aside from the Kochs–one of only two entities that maxed out to him–and he didn’t even list an address for them.

Who maxed out to Calcara for Kansas? People like you.

Please consider a donation today!

MEET Matthew

Kansas Born - Kansas Raised

A third-generation Kansan, the son of a labor lawyer/Air Force veteran father and a public school teacher mother, Matthew Calcara is the Democratic candidate for Kansas State House District 30 in 2018. Now 36, Matthew was born in 1981 at KU Medical Center.

Growing up in Johnson County, Matthew attended Shawnee Mission public schools, eventually graduating near the top of his class, and earning an academic scholarship to the University of Southern California.

No Place Like Home

After graduating from USC in 3 years, Matthew would enjoy growing professional success, first as a journalist for CBS Travel Editor Peter Greenberg, and then as Peter’s New Media Manager, building Greenberg’s social media and digital operations from the ground up.

After consulting stints at Guthy|Renker, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Online (where he was a producer for Disneyland.com), Capital Group and Disney (again), Matthew felt satisfied professionally. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

He decided there was something more important than professional success that California could never give him: proximity to his family, his roots, and the place he’d always called “home.”

Becoming A Candidate

When his latest Disney contract ended, Matthew packed up a U-Haul and drove with his Dad back across the country to Kansas.

Seeking to make a difference in Kansas just as he’d done even while living in California (like getting Wichita’s Dan Manning included as part of the Grassroots 15), Matthew was elected to the board of the Kansas City Metro chapter of Equality Kansas, the state’s largest LGBT rights organization. He is also precinct committeeman (Olathe 4-14) for the Johnson County Democratic Party.

He gives back as a volunteer with the Kansas Voter Registration Project, a non-partisan organization that helps people in Kansas (and Missouri) register to vote. He’s used his digital skills to build websites for a number of local organizations like Kansas Equality PAC.

After seeing his state representative consistently ignore, and even mock, the wishes of constituents, Matthew signed up as a potential candidate with RunForSomething.net, and was selected for candidate training by the Victory Institute. In April 2017, he officially declared his candidacy for Kansas House District 30 (Olathe & Lenexa – 87th to 127th, between Pflumm & Renner). Now an official partner of the DLCC, RunForSomething endorsed Matthew as part of its first class of 65 endorsed candidates from 17 states around the country.

You can learn more about his stances on the issues that are important to the people of the 30th District.

Want to get involved in making a difference in your community, whether for Matthew’s campaign, or for a cause that’s important to you? We will show you how!
