MEET Peter:
Be A Hero – Save Democracy
Raised in Union, New Jersey, in an Indian-American family, Peter Jacob understands how important a safe and caring community is for success. After attending Union County College, he continued undergraduate studies in Sociology at Kean University. Soon after, Peter studied at Washington University in St. Louis, earning a Master of Social Work from the top-ranked program in the nation.
During his undergraduate and graduate years, Peter was a student activist and leader. He worked with the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW), the YWCA, and the International Institute. Through these and other community organizations, Peter helped fight the ongoing scourges of child abuse, human trafficking, and the disastrous Iraq War.
Meanwhile, he continued to proudly campaign for health care reform, environmental sustainability, and immigrant integration back here in the United States.
After moving back to New Jersey, he immediately began work as a community organizer, developing and maintaining a homeless shelter program through a coalition of churches, businesses, schools, hospitals, and individuals.
Peter witnessed the impact of the financial crisis on families firsthand, working with them to rebuild after losing homes, jobs, and health insurance. These experiences assisting the most vulnerable sticks with Peter to this day.
He cares about our friends and neighbors who battle mental diseases, senior citizens who have to choose between medicine and food, and working class families struggling to make house payments.
Peter’s parents were able to achieve the American Dream of providing a better life for their children. Many families across the 7th District, and across New Jersey, have been able to do the same.
But for a growing number of families, the unfortunate reality is the Dream being crushed under the weight of rampant greed in a race pitting neighbors against one another.
Peter is prepared to fight forward alongisde residents of the 7th District, and help make the American Dream achievable for all.
For too long, we lacked real options or end up choosing the “lesser evil.” In 2017, fellow Democrats throughout the nation, especially in Virginia and New Jersey, have proved that things will be different. Let’s acknowledge past failures that gave us Trump and an extremist right-wing agenda.
Let’s give people policies to fight for, and by extension, restore confidence in our government. Let’s build a nation that brings people together instead of dividing us based on political affiliation, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, or religion.
In order to do any of this, we need leadership with new energy and ideas. People with vision, integrity, and a commitment to public service. We deserve leaders who think of the next generation instead of just the next election.
We, the American people, have everything we need to reverse our economic decline and achieve prosperity for all our citizens. The only thing standing in our way is the corrupt and complacent political establishment that puts politics and profits over people.
