TEXAS RECOMMENDATIONS: Lupe Valdez - Governor, Mike Collier - Lt Governor, Justin Nelson - Attorney General, Beto O'Roarke - U.S. Senate

Meet Lupe:

In 2004, Lupe Valdez shook the political establishment in Dallas County, becoming  one of the first Democrats elected countywide in many years.  Lupe was ultimately elected to four terms as Sheriff of Dallas County and served from 2005-2017.  She was the only Latina Sheriff in the United States and one of very few LGBTQ Americans serving in public office .

Prior to becoming Sheriff, Lupe worked to protect the lives and property of American citizens at home and abroad as a captain in the U.S. Army and as a federal agent.

The daughter of migrant farmworkers and the youngest child in a family of ten -- Lupe learned the value of a strong work ethic and the opportunity that comes with education. Educar para elevar, educate to elevate, are words she has lived by.  She put herself through college to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Southern Nazarene University, sometimes working two jobs to pay for her education. Later, while working as a federal agent, she completed her Master’s in Criminology from UT-Arlington.

As a federal agent and sometimes undercover, Lupe investigated fraud and abuse in the United States and money laundering from criminal organizations in South America.

While Sheriff, Valdez worked diligently to address deep structural problems that had developed over the preceding 20 years.  The county jail was understaffed, overpopulated, and unsanitary.  With her team and the leadership of the County Commissioners, she succeeded in tackling many of the challenges that had plagued the Department such as improving the quality of care for mentally ill inmates, changing culture, and striving to ensure any individual touched by the criminal justice system was treated with respect and dignity.

Meet Mike:

Mike Collier started his career at Exxon, but soon found his way to PriceWaterhouseCoopers – one of the biggest accounting firms in the world, with tens of thousands of employees. He served in the audit practice for 10 years, eventually becoming a top aide to the PwC World Chairman. Finally, he served in Houston as a Partner for ten years, leading a team of two dozen professionals providing due diligence, structuring, and valuation services to some of PwC’s largest and most sophisticated energy clients. Then, Mike helped build a successful Texas oil company, serving as its CFO.

As “a cop on the beat,” Mike built a reputation for rigorous financial analysis, independent decision-making, and a commitment to telling the truth, no matter what. If we’re going to hold politicians accountable, that’s exactly what Texas needs right now.

Mike is a graduate of Georgetown High School in Williamson County and the University of Texas, where he received his undergraduate degree and MBA, and played the trumpet in the Longhorn Band. Mike and Suzanne live in the Houston area, and their two sons graduated from UT in Austin.

Meet Justin:

My name is Justin Nelson. I’m a husband, a father of three, a lawyer, a professor at UT Law School, a former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the founder of the non-profit One Nation One Vote, and a native Texan.

I’m also running as a Democrat for Attorney General of Texas. And believe it or not, I have a chance to win.

Actually, WE have a chance to win. A chance to fight against fraud. A chance to protect consumers. A chance to ensure every vote counts. And more importantly, a chance to stand up for the rule of law.

I am NOT a politician. Yet, with your help, I can be the first Democratic elected official in Texas in 24 years. And I can do it fairly, and honestly.

Unlike our current Attorney General, Ken Paxton, I’m not under indictment for defrauding my friends and clients, and I won’t swipe your $1,000 pen.

Ken Paxton has spent too long working on the side of special interests instead of doing his job to protect Texans. His indictment is a disgrace to Texas. An Attorney General should enforce the law, not break the law.

From rejecting consumer protections to helping gerrymander Texas to refusing to investigate health care fraud to trying to get rid of protections against pre-existing conditions, Paxton’s priorities ignore the needs of the people that he swore to serve.

I will work for ALL Texans, not for special interests.
I will work to stop corruption, fraud, and government waste.
I will work to safeguard consumer protections.
I will work to ensure everyone is treated equally under the law.

In fact, my work for you starts NOW. And defeating Ken Paxton is the first thing on my list.

Thank you for standing with me. Let’s do this!

Sincerely,
Justin Nelson

If given the honor to serve, Nelson promises to fight against special interests, fraud, and corruption.

Stand with Justin and Pitch in Today. Any amount will go a long way to leading our campaign to victory.

U.S. Senate Poll

Meet Beto:

Beto O’Rourke is a fourth-generation Texan, born and raised in El Paso. After graduating from Columbia University, Beto worked in New York for a few years before deciding to move back to his hometown and start a small technology company. El Paso wasn’t the most likely place to start a company like this, but thanks to the work of some really talented El Pasoans, the company was a success. Over the years Stanton Street hired dozens of people in high skill, high-wage jobs that one might not expect to see in a border community.

Outside of work, Beto became deeply involved in the civic, business and community efforts in El Paso. He ran for El Paso City Council in 2005 and served for two terms before running for U.S. Congress in 2012, taking on an eight-term incumbent and winning. He knocked on thousands of doors and had real conversations, face-to-face, with the voters in El Paso.

In Congress, Beto serves on the House Committees for Armed Services and Veterans Affairs. He has made it a priority to work across the aisle to secure bipartisan support for his legislation, because Beto knows our country is at its best when we can put party aside to work together, build consensus and find common ground.

Much of Beto’s focus has been on improving the ability for veterans to get the health care — and other earned benefits — that they need. He’s also been focused on curbing the influence of corporate money in Congress. He helped introduce the “No PAC Act,” which would stop candidates for federal office from relying on PACs to bankroll their campaigns.

Visit our issues page and learn more about the many issues that make up Beto’s campaign platform.

Accountability and responsiveness are critical to excellence in public service. Beto has made it a priority to host monthly town halls in El Paso to hear directly from his constituents. For nearly five years he hasn’t missed a single one. And that’s exactly how he’s running his campaign for U.S. Senate.

Beto is traveling to every part of Texas to meet with Texans in their communities. Whether they’re Democrats, Republicans, Independents or even non-voters, all Texans deserve an accountable, full-time, full-service Senator who’s committed to working tirelessly for our state. Now is the time for Texas to step up and lead.

Beto and his wife, Amy, are raising their three children, Ulysses, Molly and Henry, in El Paso.
