Up Against The Bathroom Bill Lady – Konni Burton

Dan Patrick, Lt. Governor of Texas has donated $20,000 of his own campaign funds to Konni Burton's campaign. What a waste of money. Read about it here.

Wendy Davis held this State Senate seat from January 9, 2009 - January 13, 2015. The Republican incumbent, Konni Burton, is not for the people or the children. She is very Anti-Gay and she co-sponsored the SB 242 bill that would hurt LGBT children, and the Texas bathroom bill as well.

Meet Beverly:

North Texas Native

Born in Fort Worth, and raised in Burleson, Beverly is a proud, lifelong resident of North Texas. She has dedicated her life to creating economic opportunities, promoting investment in North Texas and expanding access to high-quality education for our kids. Continuing her lifelong commitment to service in North Texas, Beverly is running as a Democrat to represent the people of Senate District 10 in Tarrant County.

An Advocate for Education

Beverly's passion for education began at a very young age, influenced by her mother, a Texas History teacher and coach and her father a decorated World War II veteran. Her parents, both North Texas natives met while attending Texas Wesleyan University in the late 40's. A graduate of the Burleson public school system, Beverly did not attend college right away. At 39 she went back to school to complete her Bachelor of Science degree at her parent's alma mater, Texas Wesleyan.

As a single mom with a son in college and another who would join her at Texas Wesleyan, Beverly’s path to a college degree wasn’t easy. With the help of Pell Grants and earned scholarships, Beverly put herself through school, graduating cum laude, ready to build a better future for herself and her family. She would later return to Texas Wesleyan and earn her Master of Business Administration.

Beverly’s belief in the power of higher education and her passion for Texas Wesleyan’s commitment to non-traditional students earned her a position on the school’s Board of Trustees. As the immediate past Chair of the Texas Wesleyan Board, Beverly remains committed to creating opportunities for Texans of all ages to further their education and job skills.

Beverly knows that all Texans should have access to a quality education. It was the motivation behind her decision to run for the Burleson Independent School District in 2007, and the reason her colleagues elected her School Board President from 2011 -2013.

A Local Businesswoman

Beverly has years of experience and success in real estate and residential development. She has been instrumental in creating investment and job opportunities in Burleson’s historic business district. Her hard work and strategic thinking were essential in the revitalization of businesses and achieving economic growth. Her commitment to cultivating local development and her commitment to the community led the Fort Worth Business Press to name her one of the “Great Women of Texas” in 2014.

A Fighter for Our Community and Our Kids

Combining her commitment to education, her desire to serve the community, and her own experiences, Beverly has been a leader of the Burleson Opportunity Fund, a program that provides scholarships for local students to attend Hill College. The work done by Beverly and other community partners has resulted in more than $1 million in college scholarships for deserving students. In 2014, Hill College recognized Beverly’s work by awarding her the Pillar of the Community award for her efforts to expand access to higher education.

A Mother, Grandmother and Community Volunteer

Beverly and her husband Charles enjoy spending time with their growing family that includes three grown sons, two daughters-in-law and seven beautiful grandchildren, four of whom are school age and attend Texas public school

Beverly and Charles are members of Arborlawn United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. They are active in civic and philanthropic organizations across North Texas including, The American Heart Association, Sister Cities, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Konni Burton's SB 242 Will Kill Children

For the last year and a half people have been asking me if I think someone in Texas will file a bill like North Carolina's notorious HB 2 to override nondiscrimination ordinances and set up the potty police - and for the last year and half I've been telling them that yes, that bill will be filed (probably a couple of versions of it) and yes, we'll have to work hard to defeat it, but that's not the bill that scares me. The bill that scares me, and it will be filed by someone out of Fort Worth, is a bill to force schools to out kids to their parents. It will be hard to fight, because it will be shrouded in a veil of parent's right to know about their kids, and, if passed, it will lead to children's deaths.

The bill I fear most has been filed by Sen. Konni Burton (R-Fort Worth). As John Wright reports over at the New Civil Rights Project, SB 242 would require "general knowledge regarding the parent's child possessed by an employee of a school district" to be given to the parent, failure to deliver the information would result in the firing or suspension of the employee.

SB 242 radically expands an existing provision that provides parents access to their children's school records, and makes it apply to every interaction a school employee has with a child. An on-the-face reading of the bill would require a teacher to contact a parent if they became aware that a student had a zit, or a crush on a classmate, or really wanted a certain pair of sneakers. If not the teacher would be fired. To be con't here.

Konni Burton's Bill sparks firestorm over fears it may force ‘outing’ of gay youths

A new bill intended to help Texans know what is going on in their children’s lives has sparked outcry from those who fear it could put some students at risk of being outed to their parents — for anything from being gay to being pregnant — by school officials.

State Sen. Konni Burton, R-Colleyville, said she filed Senate Bill 242 to make sure parents can access all school information about their students, not just what is written down in school records.

“I wasn’t concerned until a local school in my district decided, without parental input, that certain information should be kept from parents,” she told the Star-Telegram. “School districts should not be allowed to create policies, for any reason, that create exceptions to a parent’s expectation of full and honest information upon request.”

She has stressed that the words sexuality and gender aren’t in the bill.

But many are concerned about the controversial bill, particularly in behalf of gay Texas youths. To be con't here

Konni Burton's Texas Anti-Gay bill would force schools to out gay students to their parents, critics say

A Texas state lawmaker has proposed a law that critics say would force schools to out gay students against their will to their parents.

State Rep. Konni Burton filed Senate Bill 242 just days after Donald Trump was elected president, amid increasing reports of harassment and violence against minorities across the country.

Elliott Griffin, Burton’s chief of staff, told the Houston Chronicle the bill was “written in response to the Fort Worth school district issuing new guidelines about transgender students.”

The guidelines required schools to recognize students based on their gender of choice while allowing them to use the bathroom of their choice. Griffin said those guidelines also limit parents’ access to information about their children.

In an op-ed about the Forth Worth guidelines, Burton said: “Our schools are a place of learning; they are not replacements for the support and love of the family.” To be con't here.
