Announces Run for Mayor of Fort Worth
I am so honored that so many of my friends, neighbors, family and Fort Worth residents would take time out of their busy schedules on a Tuesday night to be here.
Today is a very special day in the history of our nation. 90 years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King was born. He would grow up to lead a movement that would challenge our nation to embrace its true greatness. He believed that if we can move beyond the hate and disdain created to keep us divided, we could build a great community of prosperity, goodness, and justice. He worked to breakdown the walls and barriers between people and build bridges that would connect us to each other.
43 years ago today, I started a job in City of Fort Worth’s Human Relations Commission. I would spend the next two years working across our great city to foster better relations between city employees and residents. I felt that this work mattered and helped bring the city together. It was so important that city government was accountable to its residents and that residents were active participants in civic life.
I picked Dr. King’s birthday to gather because I believe the MLK’s message is difficult and challenging.
Many people misperceive Dr. King’s message as a soft feel good message of harmony between people.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The message that Dr. King pronounced was a tough…one of hard work–the hard work of diverse peoples coming together to create a more just society where everyone can share in the prosperity created by working families, small businesses, or even large development projects.
I embrace that challenging message and believe that today’s Fort Worth must move beyond old conventions. The so-called Fort Worth way is not working for our city anymore. We cannot have a city government that says, “trust us we’ll take care of everything.”
That thinking has only benefited the few at the expense of the majority of Fort Worth residents. As proof we look at a Fort Worth tax structure where residents pay the majority of property taxes while well connected businesses, who are profiting from development projects, simply do not pay their fair share.
As our great nation struggles to survive a president that thrives on divisiveness and division, we need a mayor that rejects that concept of government…not one that relishes in being called a ‘fantastic friend’ of the president but one that resists the politics of division…because it easy to hate other and simply blame others for all our problems…what hard is Dr. King’s challenging message of a ‘beloved community’ united under the banner of good government and doing what is best for the common good.
I believe IT’S TIME to reject the so-called Fort Worth way that only benefits a small fraction of our great city.
Fort Worth is now the 15th largest city in the nation. We continue to grow and will likely see numbers of residents that few could have believed just 20 years ago. With this growth comes both challenges and opportunities. We have only one chance to get this right and the time has come to make sure we do.
So…
It is time to move beyond the old ways of Fort Worth where people are deliberately divided and led to believe there isn’t enough resources for all our neighborhoods.
It is time to move beyond economic development that does not deliver real economic opportunities for all our residents.
It is time to stop being in conflict with our schools. We must deliberately work with them as genuine partners to provide real opportunities for all of our children.
It is time to stop governing from crisis to crisis. We must offer real leadership with a clear vision for the entire city of Fort Worth.
It is time to stop denying communities a voice in our city government. We must ensure fair representation that will instill trust in city hall.
It is time to address our environment and provide real solutions to concerns on issues of public safety and natural disasters.
It is time to ensure accountability on public projects and stop letting them be used for the personal gain of a few well-connected individuals.
It is time to stop living in political fear and speak up to protect the human rights of all our neighbors.
It is time for the NEIGHBORHOOD to know that we hear them.
I believe it’s time. Time to stand up for Fort Worth, and time to stand up for each other. We have one chance to get this right. And we need a Mayor who will stand up for all of us.
I am Deborah Peoples and I am running for Mayor of the City of Fort Worth. I would be honored to have your support. It’s time.
