LARRY PRAEGER - Texas Supreme Court Justice - Place 6 - TEXAS NEEDS LARRY!

Texas Needs Larry Praeger on the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court determines whether a civil trial has been conducted fairly and the law properly applied.

After 30 years of experience representing individuals, I bring the perspective of someone who understands the impact of litigation on individuals and the mechanics trials.

Larry is from Sumter, South Carolina.  He attended public school there until he left to attend Simon’s Rock College in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.  Larry worked during school and summers to help finance his education.

Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a desire to obtain a law degree.  He moved to Texas to attend South Texas College of Law Houston, where he could work while attending school.

After graduation, Larry accepted the position as Assistant County Attorney in Bell County, Texas, prosecuting misdemeanors, juvenile cases, and related civil matters.  Bell County included Ft. Hood.  He obtained a great deal of practical jury trial experience and prosecuted the first DWI jury trial using videotape evidence in the county.

After three years, Larry then moved to Dallas.  He worked as an associate attorney until 1988 when he opened his own practice.

He was appointed by Judge Barefoot Sanders to represent a defendant in a complex criminal savings and loan case and represented clients in criminal family law cases and other general civil matters. While he has handled many criminal cases over the years, he has recently transitioned to civil practice.

His practice now includes representation of mental health professionals on licensing complaints and litigation preparation, and mediation, as well as family law.  Larry is board certified in family law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Professional Life:

Larry has represented individuals and businesses in a wide variety of cases.  He has appeared in every level of civil court from Justice of the Peace, to the Texas Supreme Court.  He is also a certified mediator.

Service to the Profession:

Larry volunteered to serve five years on the District 6 Grievance Committee of the state bar, which hears and assesses ethical complaints against lawyers.  He additionally serves as a mentor to young lawyers establishing their practices through the Dallas Bar Association's Transition to Law Practice program.

Larry is not afraid to take on difficult cases.  He fought against unjustified actions of a state agency in the landmark Texas Supreme Court case of Black vs. Dallas County Child Welfare Unit 835 S.W.2d 626 (TEX. 1992). Larry and his wife, Jessica, have been married since 1989.  They have two sons, James, a sophomore at the University of Texas Austin, and Nate, a junior at Stephen F. Austin.
